I re-watched The Big Lebowski with a friend recently. She and I have relatively little in common, but we get along and spend lots of time together because of a handful of closely shared interests and perspectives, including a profound, abiding dissatisfaction with life. She and I watch a lot of movies and television together. She’s usually distractingly talkative during them, but I seem to recall her being uncharacteristically attentive during The Big Lebowski. The only interjection that really stuck out was at the very end, when the Stranger speaks directly to the audience, repeating the Dude’s famous pronouncement:
“The Dude abides… I don’t know about you, but I take comfort in that. It’s good to know he’s out there – the Dude – takin’ ‘er easy for all us sinners.”
